Abstract:
 Abstract: Objective To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of ultrasound-guided microwave ablation in the treatment of refractory hyperthyroidism. Methods A total of 77 patients with refractory hyperthyroidism were enrolled in the study, and then grouped into two groups according to the voluntary principle. The patients in observation group were treated with microwave ablation (n=42), and those in control group received iodine-131 therapy (n=35). The levels of total triiodothyronine (TT3), free triiodothyronine (FT3), total tetraiodothyronine (TT4), free tetraiodothyronine (FT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) before and after treatment were detected to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety. The patients were followed-up for 24 months, and the incidence of hypothyroidism was recorded. Results The cure rate of observation group was significantly higher than that of control group at 6 months after treatment (P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of TT3, TT4, FT3 and FT4 in the two groups were significantly decreased (P<0.05), while the TSH level was increased (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between two groups before and after treatment (P>0.05). The incidences of adverse reactions in two groups were 9.52% and 16.67%, respectively, without statistical significance (P>0.05). The incidence of lifelong hypothyroidism in observation group was significantly lower than that in control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Ultrasound-guided microwave ablation which not only realizes the therapeutic effect which was similar to that of radioactive iodine treatment, but also has low risk of lifelong hypothyroidism is safe and reliable.
