- Abstract: In the chronic stage of spinal cord injury, the area of spinal cord necrosis constituted by glial scar and its surrounding cystic cavity, usually presents different shapes and fuzzy bounders in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To solve the problem that the area of spinal necrosis can not be accurately identified based on the image alone, a method based on the “gold standard” of pathological section is proposed to help mark the actual area of spinal necrosis in MRI image. In the multi-modal MRI images of chronic spinal cord injury denoised by bilateral filter and registered by rigid body, the spinal cord is separated by the snake model and straightened by the bicubic interpolation method. After fusing images of different modes with dual tree-complex wavelet transform, the glial scar and cystic area based on pathological section have the consistent characteristics in relative spatial position with the spinal necrosis area of MRI image. The spatial mapping relationship between pathological section of spinal cord and MRI image is established, and finally the marking of actual necrosis area in MRI image is realized. With roundness and eccentricity as shape evaluation indexes, the MRI necrosis areas marked by this method are compared with the results based on “gold standard” of pathological sections, and the similarity was found to be 0.93±0.03 and 0.97±0.02 respectively. The results show that the mapping relationship constructed by this method can accurately and objectively mark the actual necrotic areas of MRI images, which lays a foundation for the automatic recognition and segmentation of MRI necrotic areas in the later stage.
