Abstract:
Abstract: Objective To further reveal the mechanisms of neuromodulation by ultrasound stimulation and the range of stimulatory effects caused by ultrasound stimulation, to apply ultrasound stimulation to the prefrontal cortex of rats for synchronously recording and analyzing the changes characteristics of electrocorticogram (ECoG) in the prefrontal, parietal and occipital cortices. Methods Under anesthesia, a stereotaxic apparatus was used to place the ultrasound transducer right above the prefrontal lobe of rats, and the stimulation duration was 20 min. Power spectral density (PSD), amplitude and interrelationship values were used as indicators to analyze and compare the total power and mean amplitude of ECoG as well as interrelationship values among cortices of pre-, mid- and post-ultrasonic stimulations. Results (1) Ultrasound stimulation increased the total PSD and mean amplitude of the ECoG of the prefrontal cortex (P<0.05). After the ultrasound stimulation stopped, the ECoG returned to the pre-stimulation level in a short time. (2) In the parietal and occipital cortices, ultrasound stimulation had no significant effect on the PSD and mean amplitude of ECoG and each frequency band. However, during the ultrasound stimulation, the average amplitude of the partial periods in the occipital cortex was obviously different from that before stimulation, which indicated that during the second half of the ultrasound stimulation, the range of the stimulatory effect caused by ultrasound stimulation was diffused to the occipital cortex. Conclusion Ultrasound stimulation can regulate the ECoG of local stimulation region, and the neuromodulation has the characteristics of promptness and rapid recovery. In general, the regulation effect of ultrasound stimulation on ECoG is limited. The effect of ultrasound stimulation on the ECoG of other cortical layers away from the stimulation sites remains unclear, and the effect is probably the subsequent neural network response caused by ultrasound stimulation.
